Tribal Tree Mask
Here we have an Illustration of a creature designed to be a mask. The final product was created in Illustrator though I started my process in Photoshop, I took a high resolution image of tree bark and reflected it several times over. After reflecting the image I searched through the seam of the reflection and searched for faces throughout it. When scanning for faces I found this figure that resembled a dragon and started there. After figuring out the face of the dragon I continued adding to the design making sure that every part was symmetrical. The final product resulted in this intriguing dragon faced mask compiled of intricate patterns and shapes.
Below are some process sketches of how I got my inspiration
The images above show how I came up with the concept of the dragon face mask. All of the sketches in red are scanned from tracing paper where I discovered faces throughout the grooves in the tree bark. Marked in red on the picture of the tree bark displays the location of where I found the faces. I found this process of manipulating the tree bark to be a fun and interesting way to create an illustration.
